In the Loop: Spring 2010

The FCIRCC 2009 Annual Report has been released for several months and can be found at the web site http://www.fcircc.org.  Several layers of the report can be examined.  The complete document contains a listing of all citrus research projects in Florida as reported by UF/IFAS, USDA-ARS, FCOC and DPI.  The Executive Summary provides Citrus Industry Priorities complete with detailed background from the four primary FCIRCC partners (Production Managers, Packers, Processors and Harvesters).  Research gaps and needs are identified along with recommendations to bridge the gaps and meet the needs that may exist.

In the Loop: Summer 2009

The Florida Citrus Industry Research Coordinating Council (FCIRCC) has determined their 2009 Research Priorities. Attached you will find the list and background material. The next step in the process will be to obtain the current research projects from the various agencies. This will then allow the FCIRCC to determine the “gaps” that may exist between research needed and actual work that is under way. This process has been effective and encourages research agencies to direct work toward industry priorities. The “Gaps Analysis” should be available this fall.

The Florida Citrus Production Research Advisory Council (FCPRAC) met on March 13 and recommended funding the final 21 proposals. As we all hoped big dollars brought lots of interested scientists to the greening/canker challenge. The request for proposals ended July 14 and the results are impressive. One of the “big” questions has been “How much money is needed to fund greening research?” The answer has been “Whatever it takes, we will find it!” At the Florida Citrus Commission (FCC) meeting on June 18 a Preliminary Budget was passed. Many of you have been involved with the research planning process; others may be less familiar with what is happening. This simple newsletter is an attempt to keep you “in the loop” regarding the process. The research agencies will pass along research results as they occur. Our goal is to make sure you know how the research plan is being implemented. We welcome feed back; questions and comments. I guess it is hard for an old county agent not to write a newsletter!
